Search Engine and Directory Submission

Search engine (SE) submission is not a magic elixir that will suddenly make your site successful. Your content and design are the foundation for a successful site. Before you start submitting your site to search engines, you need to get it in order and add the appropriate meta tags.

After you get your site in order, submit it to the following:

The Open Directory Project (ODP)

www.dmoz.org - The ODP is a directory, not a search engine; but almost every major search engine has it indexed. It's directory is used by such as AOL Search, Direct Hit, HotBot, Google, Lycos, Netscape Search, etc. It can take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on these partner sites. The ODP makes updates of the data available weekly, but each partner has their own update schedule.

When you submit to the ODP, make sure you submit to the appropriate category. Drill down as far in the hierarchy as possible to find the category that best describes your site. Compare it to the category description if there is one, and compare it to the other sites in the category. If it doesn't match, keep looking. If you need help, email me.

Submit your site once. If it has not been listed within three weeks, you may submit it again. If you prefer, email me, and I will check on it.

Google

www.google.com is a great search engine and is also used by Yahoo!. The submit page is hidden under the "Jobs, Press, Cool Stuff..." link on the home page or you can get there using this link.

AltaVista

www.altavista.com - AltaVista is a popular search engine. It also powers Raging Search. Most of the major meta search engines use AltaVista. You can submit your site here. Both free and paid submissions are available.

Fast Search

www.alltheweb.com - Fast Search is just that—fast. It also powers Lycos Search and allthesites.com.

The rest of the bunch

Although the search engines and directories in the first column are the most widely used, you should still submit to the following sites:
